Black Hills in the FallPublished September 30, 2026
Sometimes the Best Real Estate is the View Outside Your Window
There is still time to take a fall drive through the Black Hills—and right now may be one of the best times to go.
I recently took a beautiful drive that reminded me why so many of us are fortunate to call the Black Hills home.
I headed up Tinton Road toward Iron Creek Lake, surrounded by trees beginning to show off their fall colors. The yellows were incredible—bright, vibrant and almost glowing in the afternoon light.
From Iron Creek Lake, the drive continued toward Cement Ridge Lookout, where the views open up and give you a whole new appreciation for the size and beauty of the Black Hills.
Eventually, I made my way back toward Spearfish, traveling down Spearfish Canyon. If you've never experienced the canyon in the fall, put it on your list. The combination of towering limestone cliffs, winding roads and golden aspen makes the drive feel like you're traveling through a postcard.
I also stopped at Spearfish Falls near the Latchstring Inn. It's an easy reminder that you don't have to travel far or plan an elaborate adventure to find something beautiful. Sometimes it's just a short walk, a waterfall and a few quiet minutes enjoying where you are.
Don't Wait Too Long for the Fall Colors
The Black Hills are constantly changing, and fall is one of those seasons that seems to disappear almost as quickly as it arrives.
If you've been thinking about taking a drive, there is still time. Grab a coffee, invite someone you enjoy spending time with, and take the long way home.
You don't need a destination.
Just go see what you find.
Sometimes the Best Real Estate Isn't the Real Estate We Own
Working in real estate, I spend a lot of time talking about homes, land, views, locations and property values.
But drives like this are a good reminder that some of the most valuable things around us aren't for sale.
Sometimes the best real estate is a quiet road through the Black Hills.
It's the golden trees along Tinton Road.
It's the view from Cement Ridge.
It's Spearfish Canyon in October.
It's standing beside Spearfish Falls and listening to the water.
Sometimes the best real estate isn't the real estate we own. Sometimes it's simply enjoying what nature has provided.
That's one of the things I love about living in the Black Hills. Beautiful places aren't just destinations here—they're part of everyday life.
So if you've been waiting for the right time to take that drive, this might be your sign.
The leaves are turning. The yellows are vibrant. And there's still time to get out and enjoy the Black Hills.
